The Restaurant

Woolrich Cottage was built in the 1920's and was home to members of the Woolrich family who started the nursery that operated on this site until the 1960s. Ted Woolrich was one of the first nurserymen of the Hills and helped establish the National Rhododendron Gardens. Iris Woolrich his wife, started the Cuckoo restaurant, then named Quambie. The cottage has now been transformed into a character-filled home with art deco features and resonating with local history, providing space, light and comfort in idyllic surroundings. This is a private, quiet hideaway for lovers, friends or corporate guests, with everything supplied.
The unusual gardens for both Woolrich properties show what can happen when a plant nursery has been abandoned for 40 years. Beds of rhododendron and camellia seedlings have grown into tall trees, crowded together and reaching for the sky. Azaleas create a colourful maze, and there are many specimen trees about the garden, including a magnificent weeping beech and an American tulip tree. It is like a secret garden where myriad paths and steps have been restored to create some fascinating walks. Lyrebirds are common visitors and delight in digging up the garden; in the early morning they are not hard to spot but likely to run off when disturbed.

Woodlands Rainforest Retreat is a short break destination for adult couples, a hideaway retreat offering a rare combination of indulgent luxury and nature based experience in a truly secluded temperate rainforest in the mountains of the Black Spur. The four architect designed self contained bungalows are situated in rainforest remnant on 40 acres overlooking the fern gullies of the Hermitage Creek.
Each bungalow is hidden in its own separate enclave within the rainforest, offering complete seclusion, both from each other and the outside world. They are completely out of sight, overlooking beautiful fern gullies and a private bushland lake, with the sound of the babbling Hermitage Creek in the background. There are no neighbours....only the wombats, wallabies, echidnas and platypus (if you listen very carefully). Guests are able to enjoy a unique part of Australia, a temperate rainforest with native flora and fauna featuring magnificent birdlife. All of these wonders can be enjoyed from the huge elevated deck of each bungalow. Or through the floor to ceiling windows that frame the wonderful backdrop.
Woodlands offers a rare opportunity for guests to enjoy this wonderful environment without compromising on their comfort or luxury, while protecting the integrity of the natural environment. The bungalows act as a perfect "hide" - protecting the rainforest from human interference while allowing guests to enjoy the beauty of the rainforest.
The four bungalows were designed by local architect David Underwood, and are split level and open plan with huge windows that look out at a wallpaper of living forest. Crafted from local materials - polished mountain ash floorboards,recycled myrtle beech benches and radially sawn yellow stringybark exterior cladding, the bungalows blend into the surrounding bush so perfectly that they seem part of the rainforest furniture. ...

This is a truly unique house. Adeline is a 1920s cottage divided into two large luxuriously furnished apartments. The cottage was built in 1920 by a Melbourne solicitor as his summer residence to take respite from Melbourne's summer heat in the cooler Dandenongs.
It has been a family home until 1980s when it became a hills Bed and Breakfast. It is very large by cottage standards and easily accommodates two spacious apartments each containing 3 rooms.
